Adrienne Keene is from San Diego, California. She is an Assistant Professor in American studies and Ethnic studies at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She is also a writer and activist. Keene earned her BA in 2007 from Stanford University in Native American Studies and Cultural Anthropology. She also attained her Doctorates from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2010 in which she studied Culture, Communities, and Education.
Keene is well known for her writings on Native Americans and the cultural appropriations committed against them. As she herself is a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, she created a blog titled Native Appropriations, http://nativeappropriations.com, about her encounters with Non-Natives according to her culture. She also conducts a lot of research into supporting Native college students. Keene works with an organization named College Horizons that aids Native students through a series of workshops in different stages of college, from admissions to life in college. She posts a lot on her twitter regarding current events, mainly pertaining to her subjects on Natives. She is most notable for her comments on the Dakota Access Pipelines, college access for Native students, and other commentary on Native American mascots.
